Aesthetic Stencilled Tile

  • Style/technique: Aesthetic floral, Arts & Crafts stencilled
  • Manufacturer: Unattributed
  • Dimensions: 6" x 6"
  • Date: circa 1900
  • Colours: 8

This is a most individual tile of unusual manufacture, entirely hand decorated and glazed in the manner of Arts & Crafts tiles on a buff plastic clay body. The buff clay body has been tin glazed, decorated and lead glazed. The decoration has been hand painted through stencils (we had four of these to compare).

The decoration is of a bunch of flowers with a large pink rose to its centre, most of the rose being in pale pink. There is an unusually large total of eight colours. The style has both delft and aesthetic influences.

The tile appears similar in style, technique and construction to tiles illustrated in 'Fired Earth, 1000 Years of Tiles in Europe', illustrations 98 and 99, therein described as, "tin-glazed with stencilled in-glaze decoration, plastic clay, Spanish, circa 1900".

Purchased several years ago in the British architectural antiques trade this was almost certainly imported around 1900. It can be identified as being made for export for the British market by the dimensions, 6" x 6" being the British standard size compared to 125mm x 125mm (~5" x 5") the European standard.

Condition: Excellent
Price: £40 (approx $75)
Ref: 02325

There is a chip to a back corner, apparently from prior to the original installation as there is soot and mortar residue in it, it appears as a small chip on the face top right corner, there is also small chip to the bottom edge. There is one small stun chip on a green leaf third from the right otherwise surface condition is just about perfect. Other marks are minor manufacturing imperfections, the tile is very clean and bright.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
