One very tiny chp on the top edge otherwise
perfect. Style/technique:
Art nouveau
majolica An excellent art nouveau design made by
Ceramique Faienceries de Gien and marked C F G
verso but a design well in the english taste.
For good reason because this design was also
done by Corn Bros and likely designed by them
for an english registered design has been noted
made by Gien and copying english designs was
quite common for continental manufacturers more
so than vice versa. This has more to it than any of the Corn
examples I can recall which have always been
more limited in colour usually white ground,
green leaves and blue or yellow flowers This
with the addition of the outlining to the
flowers makes a much fuller and satisfying
example of the pattern, the green ground is also
deliberately mottled. So a fascinating tile, an english tile made
by the French (although the company was started
by an Englishman about eighty years earlier) and
they did it better than us except that the
glazes lack the brilliance of the english. In
recent years have seen more of the french than
english version but we now have one Corn Bros
tile here. Verso very clean, generic bars, C F G
embossed.
