• Style/technique: Pictorial Painted • Manufacturer: Mintons China Works • Dimensions: 6" x 6" • Date: circa 1885	An excellent geoup of tiles with line paintings of children playing and quite unusual to find a domestic dog illustrated on a tile. Handpainted in brown on a good quality buff Mintons China Works tile and signed FH. Perhaps the elusive Fred Hodge who features on a potrait tile by George Cartlidge! Very likely unique tiles painted for a special order, see the tile below which bears pencilled notations referring to the customer and works to be done. Versos quite clean with usual Mintons naming.

Interesting notes suggesting the tiles were made for bespoke fitted hall furniture. Various phrases can be made out such as "brass handles", "stained lights" and "send Richard" (another name crossed out). The price 5/- which may well have been the price of the three tiles, a single 6" ordinary printed picture tile was around sixpence at the time.
The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
