One of a number of built landscape views dating from around 1880, entitled 'Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket' and signed W Wise in the bottom left corner .A particularly finely detailed work as if he tried to engrave every brick and tile and there are tiny figures apparently unloading a cart in front of The Beehive Hotel.

This is an unusual example having a plain underside rather than the tile like grip pattern seen on most. Also most Mintons pot stands have chamfered corners and edges to avoid damage in use. very few we see are the earlier square edge and corner examples seen. This has full square edges and corners yet is marked England which is believed to have been used only from 1890 onwards and so it represents rather an oddity. In addition it is pressed in one piece rather than the majority on Mintons pot stands having separate feet affixed.

Mintons produced several series of landscapes, this appears to be from a series of tourist destinations, there are several Edinburgh scenes, some from Warwickshire, the Derbyshire Peak District and various other sites from around the country. The majority of these designs are found on teapot stands rather than tiles and they were presambly sold as souvenirs. Other series often appearing on teapot stands are the ruined abbey and cathedral series although again they may not be 'a series' as such perhaps being made for souvenir shops.
