Nunerous chips around the edges but all very tiny and barely imposing on the face of the tile. Some light surface wear, this tile was apparently in a teapot stand, only visible when held just so to catch the light it displays very well.

One of a series of twelve landscapes engraved by L T Swetnam in1886 and the series introduced the following year. An interesting mix of decorating techniques being both lithoprinted and block printed, lithoprint for the fine detailed scene and block printing for the solid colours in the borders.

Whilst few of these scenes are identified this is known to be Splugen in the Alps from a similar scene from another series also by Mintons Ltd and also engraved by L T Swetnam. The views appear to have been drawn at the same time but from a slightly different perspective as if a tour of artists visited and two of their pictures were later published. Mintons in common with other manufacturers copied most of their landscapes from books.

Verso slight stain and a few grains of adhesive residue, embossed name etc.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
