A solitary tiny chip on the bottom edge
otherwise perfect. No surface marks at all most
exceptional for such a high relief tile.
Style/technique: Art Nouveau
majolica This is a really excellent tile, super design
and a super tile, I can't recall seeing this
design before and was pleased to add one to my
personal collection. A bold 'triple tulip' genre
design but in most exceptional high relief both
indented and embossed. It is rare to find such
high relief majolica tiles especially in art
nouveau style where most are low relief and at
times simply the outline. Essential for the appreciation of relief is
the quality of the glaze for it needs to be
translucent and yet having depth of colour. This
glaze fulfills both criteria and is fabulous, a
great golden brown which shows an excellent
range of hues according to the height/depth of
the relief. Malkin, under appreciated and represented,
Austwick to blame to a reasonable extent as
Malkin incorrectly attributed to Pilkington by
them. Verso very clean, no adhesive residue, M T W
& Co embossed. This the older grip pattern
and so apparently predating 1907/8 when it
appears a new pattern was introduced. Just the slight chipping mid right edge
otherwise perfect. No surface marks at all most
exceptional for such a high relief tile. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format, a
larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG
format can be forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
