Minor manufacturing flaws. Style: Gothic An early industrial wall tile design by A W N
Pugin in the gothic style decorated in brilliant
colours, block printed and painted overglaze.
Around 1855 when the design was introduced and
still around 1875 when this tile was made the
brightness and liveliness of the colours and
designs brought life and freshness to homes in a
way that no other then available technology
could. Pattern number 797 in the Mintons Ltd pattern
book, (Mintons copied the originals by Minton,
Hollins & Co. and used the same pattern
numbers), Mintons continued to make this design
into the 1890s using the original pattern number
which indicates an introduction date of the
design in the 1850s. The British Museum has a
pair
of these in their collection. Removed from furniture which unfortunately
did not have the complete set one apparently
damaged and so replaced so perfectly clean and
with minimal marks most due to the variabilities
of manufacture at such an early date. No damage, minor manufacturing flaws, three very
tiny flakes on the dark green, other extremely
minor manufacturing flaws.
