One very tiny, one minute rim chips. Style: Art nouveau A super design of the swirling floral genre
printed in a super soft but not weak blue. More
art nouveau than many of the genre, some may
question if it is really art nouveau but I'll
say more so than not. The design is found in majolica by Pilkington
and attributed to James Henry Rudd by Tony
Cross, a design for a stove by Rudd is
illustrated in The Studio magazine. Being the
author of Practical Cabinet Making and
Draughting and principal author of Cabinet
making; Principles of Designing, Construction
and Laying Out Work his main interest seems to
have been furniture but his talents extended to
other products. He is described as a desiger of
interior decorations, furniture, metal-work,
tiles and pottery, textile fabrics and stained
glass and designed tiles for Godwin &
Hewitt. He lived in Barnstaple, also home to
Shapland & Petter fine furniture makers, and
likely designed some of their pieces. Furniture
from Shapland & Petter was often fitted with
tiles from quality makers including Godwin &
Hewitt, Marsden and Mintons. This print may be a copy but it is not
always as clear cut as it may seem, Pilkington
amongst many were known to copy designs of
others. Certainly it is well engraved and
printed and having seen a few examples this
would seem to be the norm. No major printing
flaws and super graduations in tone it is a
superb printed tile and with a clear, brilliant
glaze too. Versos very clean, ring grip pattern similar
to Boote's, pattern number very faintly
printed. Half a dozen very tiny rim chips/roughness. Tiny chip lower right a few very tiny touches of
roughness to the rim.
