Two very tiny chips bottom edge, very light
rubbing to some high points and other minor surface
marks, top left corner chip a manufacturing
flaw. Style: Arts & crafts floral A very rare tile from this famous company
painted in barbotine creating gentle relief, in
the arts & crafts 'all over' style of floral
decoration. Opaque slips to mask the coloured
clay, finished with a brilliant traslucent
glaze. On a heavy light brown clay body,
slightly variegated and nearly half an inch
thick weighing almost double a typical tile of
the period. Versos very clean, embossed Mintons China
Works Stoke upon Trent. This grip pattern of
rails with triangle corners most similar to that
of Steele & Wood yet still quite different,
Steele & Wood's in turn often mistaken for
Wedgwood. I've never seen this verso previously
and believe that Campbell Tile Co. made it for
Mintons, both companies were owned by Colin
Minton Campbell and there are a few interactions
between the companies visible in their
wares.
