Tiny chip bottom edge, four minute rim chips,
mark mid right a spot of kiln dirty, perfect
surface. Style: Nature study A fabulous tile, well designed, modelled and
moulded, super turquoisy glaze in the tremblay
technique - deliberately thinner on the high
points to give contrast to the colours, there is
no surface wear, it is precisely as
intended. Verso near perfectly clean, naot named but
with subtle distinctive marks of the
company.

Quite a rarity, certainly I haven't
seen this particular tile before, but also for a
variety of reasons. The subject matter, the
flora and fauna of a pond is not so common, fits
in with the arts & crrafts movement love of
such things but of course usually found on flat
tiles, painted and occasionally printed and then
perhaps tinted. The added cost of tooling to
make as an industrial moulded tile, industrial
not in the least perjorative for the required
skills and technology was far greater than an
artist and some stains, very likely exceeded the
deamnd in the marketplace. Then by Steele &
Wood who did a super range of printed and at
times tilnted tiles including super picture
series but their majolica tiles are few and far
between and frankly often not very good.
