Slight flaking.roughness to side edges, very
minor surface marks. Style: Aesthetic movement An excellent design with strong contrasting
colours and brilliant glaze, Sunflowers climbing
a trellis, somewhat incongruous so maybe the
flowers are sunflower-like. This is a thicker body like Mintons' half
inch thick 'hearth quality' which was much used
by Norfolk Iron Works (Barnard, Bishop and
Barnards) for their cast iron fireplaces. An 8x6
version (with added border to left and right
sides) can be seen in the Norfolk Iron Works
catalogue sheet reproduced in William de Morgan
Tiles by Jon Catleugh. Whilst Mintons could have
supplied BBB with unnamed tiles, as this is and
there is no doubt it is Mintons however the OEM
may be Campbell who made many of Mintons' tiles.
Colin Campbell was the owner of both Mintons and
Campbell Tile Co. The design, albeit to the other hand, was
also made by Steele & Wood, click here
for an example in an unusual 'woodblock style'.
They also made the design in more traditional
colourings, including similar to this Mintons,
and many dealers attribute them to Mintons. It is not possible to say if either company
originated the design indeed it is likely both
used the same source in an art book or art
journal, despite its great reputation Mintons in
the late 19th century was well known for copying
designs and was criticised for its lack of
design prowess. My suggestion is that the design
was originated by BBB and first made for them by
Mintons then by other companies who produced as
good or better quality than Mintons for a better
price. Versos very clean, unmarked offset grid. Very tiny rim chips/roughness, surface very near
perfect.
