Roughness to the rim, very minor surface
marks. Style: Arts
& crafts movement A rare two-colour printed tile with a lively
arts & crafts design that fills the tile,
designed by L. A. Shuffrey and printed in blues
by Mintons. This the fourth example of the
design I can recall seeing but the only one in
blue. Leonard Atkinson Shuffrey had offices at 38
Welbeck St, Cavendish Sq, London, an architect
working in the era of the arts & crafts
movement he worked with designs by many of the
famous names. Austwick comments that L A
Shuffrey designed lustre tiles for Edwards 'in
imitation of William de Morgan's work'. Just two
tile designs were registered by Shuffrey but
others have been seen with his name verso. He
authored a book entitled The English Fireplace,
published in 1912. Leonard Shuffrey had been an architect's
assistant, he left that employment to set
himself up as an Architectural Decorator.
Shuffrey and Company was founded in 1880 at 38,
Welbeck Road, London. He and the business were
to become very successful in the design of
wallpaper, wall&endash;friezes,
wall&endash;tiles, and many other items produced
for the interior decoration of the grand homes
of the wealthy, and for important public and
private buildings. - Based upon
