Superficial hairline curls from just right of
centre bottom edge to just left of centre near the
yellow spade motif, visible on the edge but not
verso, along its length there is one minute glaze
chip and about an inch of fractional glaze flaking,
surface otherwise is perfect no scratches or
rubbing etc., four slight glaze losses to the tip
of the rim. Style: Art
nouveau So this is rare, not rocking horse dung rare
but not far off. If purple is your favourite
colour then you struggle especially with tiles
for it is far from the easiest colour to include
in interior design schemes. And it is mostly
purple, like 60%, and then nearly all the rest
is turquoise, brilliant turquoise, and the
colours are tonal because the body is textured
in a gently rolling manner. This is the third I have offered for sale the
previous two private sales so this is the first
on the website, it has been in my collection and
on display continuously for at least 8 - 9
years, I suspect that if I put it in a box it
would burn a hole through the side of the box.
The first time I saw it, probably about 17-18
years ago, there were two and my eyes popped and
I had to have them, this was one, the other had
had a large inclusion in the glaze ground off.
So I kept both, undecided, until one went in a
swap/part-ex. The next to come along had a few minor
blemishes, was missing the green glaze and had
couple other minor less good features but I kept
both for couple years until there was one
particularly discerning customer who, quite
rightly in most cases, had not seen a tubeline
tile that had taken his fancy preferring
embossed tiles in great part for the tonal hues
of glaze colours on the relief. He bought it and
of course was overjoyed for there are tonal hues
as well as being tubeline due to the background
texture. So I found another which I prefer and now
here is this one for sale. I did miss one a few
years ago due to a misunderstanding. I also saw
eight in a washstand, part of a £6000
bedroom suite sort of arts and craftsy but had
been 'professionally' painted white by a bedroom
suite specialist and of course framed in
furniture there is the risk of damage hidden by
the frame and so there was no possibility of
taking on the risk. So that's it, I remember every incident with
this design for it is unforgettable. Somewhat
strangely I have never seen it in any other
colours. Only Marsden could have made it, well
maybe perhaps Sherwins, for it is just
ridiculously opulent and excessive as Marsden
more than any other pulled off with aplomb.
