Condition:
Excellent Some minor corner chips but otherwise
excellent. Style/technique:
Aesthetic majolica A very rare set of tiles I have nevwr seen
the like with a nice chocolate brown floral
print on a light buff clay body. Five inch
tiles, presumably purpose made for a particular
model of fireplace or stove, purpose made
biscuit but with a pattern that was made for six
inch tiles the half inch border can be seen on
the edges. Five inch tiles are seen from time to
time mostly in delft style as it was the
standard size for such and made as
reproductions, usually handpainted on a thinner
clay body. English made tiles are known by
earlier makers Minton Hollins, Maw and Copeland
and several arts & crafts dealers imported
dutch tiles. This design on six inch tiles also seen by
Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co and Steele &
Wood the latter quite possibly making the tiles
for the former who were tableware
specialists. Versos very clean, unmarked generic
rails.
