A pleasant pair of Dutch landscapes of
windmills and farmhouses printed in blue with a
semi matt glaze, the designs stand alone, join
to make a pair or extend to a frieze. Dutch
scenes became popular in England in the
Edwardian era and verso is later Edwardian
period but without England suggesting that it
was intended for the home market.
A most unusual manufacturing technique from
Minton Hollins as the body is made from
plastic
(wet) clay rather than the usual dust
pressed clay. It is then coated with a white
engobe to make the clean background, printed and
finally glazed. Minton & Co, later Minton
Hollins were pioneers of the dust pressed method
of making tiles and plastic clay tiles from them
are rare. These were made to capitalise on the
fashion for arts & crafts handmade objects,
of course few 'arts & crafts' were entirely
handmade and these are perhaps most akin to the
18thC prints from Sadler and Green.
Two more pairs available.
