Half a dozen tiny, a few minute surface chips,
couple tiny rust stains, all minor marks, brilliant
and translucent glazes. Style: Victoriana Quite a popular design from Pilkington and in
a popular colourway a very useful lemon yellow
and grey-green which may not sound very exciting
but it is very pleasing and great for interior
design. Mixed style influences as is the nature
of the genre perhaps the stronger influence
being greek style. Designed for large areas with
a repeating pattern still it is often found in
smaller groups in fireplaces and furniture. Unusual is it is unmarked, no familiar
embossed letter P's verso, whilst few
Pilkington's tiles are unmarked they do come
along from time to time. Before lots of dealers
and collectors find tiles with similar backs and
exclaim 'Pilkington' let me say there are plenty
of similar which are certainly not by
Pilkington, a lot more evidence is required than
just a similar grip pattern. It seems that this
was a standard blank supplied by the
manufacturer of the dust press probably
Boulton's being one of the major suppliers of
engineering equipment to the potteries and
famous for its tile presses. Upon buying a press it would be delivered
with a simple back plate and a plain front plate
so that the customer could be up and running
making tiles without delay. Some manufacturers
would have their own back plates made with their
branding, others would have had their engineer
or a local engineer stamp the plate with letter
punches, many would just carry on using the
supplied plate. Many makers would keep unmarked
back plates to use for customers who requested
unmarked tiles. Whilst warning against be overly optimistic
attributing tiles with the same grip pattern
(and I mean percisely the same, width of bars
etc) it is nevertheless useful for collectors
comparing with tiles having known Pilkington's
charcteristics for example appropriate pattern
numbers. Verso clear of adhesive a little smoke
stain.
