Quite the best condition that I have seen for
one of these tiles with only very minor marks. Style: Aesthetic movement A super tile from this noted Lancaster and
London based bespoke tile decorators painted in
three colours in a free aesthetic style. The
patterns on the blue parts are incised, the
paint was applied as a block colour, allowed to
dry and the pattern scraped in a similar manner
to sgraffito decoration. A chequer pattern
albeit arranged so that a square is at the
centre of a tile rather than the cross of the
trellis, this confuses many even writers about
tiles and arts & crafts however if seen as a
panel on a wall rather than loose tiles I am
sure it would be evident to all. The design is familar, I have had a group
before and also seen other examples on Minton,
Hollins & Co. tiles with stencilled S&H,
this is unusually if not rarely in my experience
painted on a tile by Wm Godwin and without the
S&H stencil but I have no doubt that it is
S&H. Whilst Minton, Hollins & Co versos
are most often seen Copeland and Mintons have
also been seen decorated by S&H and the
reason is quite clear to those who understand
manufacturing and distribution. S&H's orders would have been far too
small for M,H to entertain, likely its minimum
order was 100 square yars (3,600 tiles) or
£100 (quite possibly much more), so S&H
would have bought from a wholesaler. And it
could be that on the day, or within the week,
the wholesaler was unable to supply M,H tiles so
S&H selected from that which was
available. Verso very clean, embossed Wm Godwin
Lugwardine Hereford.
