surface near perfect, short hairline near top right
corner, not visible verso. Style:
Figural A very rare tile with a high relief view of a
maiden reading or singing to six doves. Wade
named its tile works the Flaxman Tile Works in
honour of the famous sculptor of the same name
and its earliest works were often
sculptural. Wade's first registered design, registered in
late 1890, was an interpretation the Mistress
Mary rhyme of a similar theme to the Walter
Crane painting of the rhyme with Mary watering
stylised sunflowers with faces in the flowers. I
saw one some 15 - 20 years ago but it was sold
before I realised what it was, I believe the
same collector also had one of these which I saw
around the same time, that is the only time I
can recall seeing the design. Verso very clean, Wade's unmarked yet
distinctive grip pattern apparently exclusively
used for embossed tiles.
