Tiny chip top edge otherwise perfect. Style: Art deco A tile of a kingfisher in flight having just
captured its prey from amongst water lilies. A
known design and illustated in the standard
literature however there being in rather more
mainstream colours. Another tile likely from the collection at
the tile works, I've not seen its like in the
marketplace so perhaps a sample for guidance of
design/glaze/colour options. Even though most
customers will buy a small range of designs the
outliers are required to illustrate the range
and prowess of the company (The Pareto
Principle), even those examples ate the extremes
which never sell increase the sales of more
mainstream wares. Black tiles are of course rare, especially
decorated tiles with black backgrounds, as they
are limited in application in interior design.
As a major manufacturer of many bespoke tiles it
was essential for Maw & Co.to show off its
prowess. The design was likely available painted
in various colourways and treatments, tubeline,
to the other hand (mirror image) and so on,
certainly iy was available in different
dimensions. Verso near perfectly clean, embossed Maw
& Co., England, painted pattern number.
