Slender chip/wear top left corner, couple other
minor marks to the rim, wear to about a dozen high
points otherwise glaze surfaces perfect. Style: Arts
& Crafts Style An exceedingly rare tile having a pair of
stylised dolphins in high relief besides a staff
in a manner reminiscent of the caduceus design.
The maker previously unknown to me, well at
least the name and address embossed verso for I
suspect it likely that manufacture, at least in
part, was subcontracted to another. J C Edwards
another Ruabon company had many tiles made for
them by Maw & Co.. The manufacture of the
clay body is excellent however the glaze
painting of the green less so suggesting the
biscuit was moulded elsewhere. Eschewing speculation it is without doubt a
superb tile and in great condition whilst
showing some signs of age and manutfacturing
constraints of the times. Verso clean apart from remnants of latex
adhesive, embossed Ruabon Glazed Brick &
Fire Clay Co Ld, Pant Works, Ruabon.
