Condition: Good Right panel, top and bottom tiles have been
broken and glued otherwise one small and two
tiny rim chips, minor surface marks, the repairs
could easily be improved but are almost subsumed
by the intentional flaws. Style:
Arts & Crafts A rare pair of tile panels from this famous
company full on arts & crafts the design
near completely filling the panel and having
perhaps a unique decorating method. The black outline is thickly painted and has
resisted the glaze in places, the red glaze is
semi-matt, the green glazes are high gloss and
almost appear to be lustred, although green
iridesces most readily it is so consistent that
it appears intentional. The clay body is
dust-pressed to appear handmade and has a
textured surface. The strong buff clay has
inclusions of quite large apparently porcelain
fragments which creates inconsistencies in
shrinkage resulting in uneven edges and firing
cracks. The white fragments also gleam through
the glazes. This style of manufacture and decoration has
a long history in Japan where it is called wabi
sabi, it gained popularity in the early 1900s in
Britain also known as The Celebration of
Imperfection. One of Pilkington's greatest
attributes was the technical precision of its
tiles, true square and of consistent dimensions
and thickness are qualities imperative to
keeping the cost of installation of large areas
affordable and this was the company's main
market. That it manufactured such deliberately
imperfect tiles would have been quite a shock to
many architects and builders. Versos near perfectly clean, unusual clay,
impressed P in opposing corners.
