This was a quite popular design and
apparently originated in the 1870s or 1880s,
most often seen with a coloured majolica glaze,
occassionally seen multicolour. It was used for
large areas in shops, entranceways, dados etc
and is indeed a very useful and flexible design.
Most unusual to see it as plain white glazed
tiles although no doubt in the day it was often
so seen, likely these were supplied to a retail
shop which used the design as part of it's
branding..
Versos very clean, embossed Minton Tiles,
England.
